The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.
The one-time leader was convicted of planning a military coup in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in prison, but he was staying under confinement pending legal challenges.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after fresh information emerged.
This encompassed trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a chance to flee".
Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears
In a filing authorising the custody, the judge said information from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his getaway".
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his son.
His offspring, Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a meeting of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or see it all from your phone there on your settee? I invite you to battle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so supporters could "pray for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our country."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the chance of Bolsonaro's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of arranging to ask for protection through a embassy office", a declaration said.
The judicial paperwork highlights that the United States embassy in the capital, Brasilia, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.
Global Responses
His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist United States President President Trump, leading him to enact a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
He is being held in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will have a detention review on the next day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.
They also asked that Bolsonaro be authorized to depart his residence for medical care, saying he required ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other health problems.
Background on Conviction
He was convicted of orchestrating a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the presidential race to his ideological adversary, President Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plot which encompassed plans to murder Lula and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.
The scheme was prevented because it didn't receive the support of the military leaders. The current president was took office without incident on 1 January 2023.
But a seven days after, on 8 January, many his followers attacked and damaged government buildings in the national capital, the capital city.
The law enforcement intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.
The justices found that the protesters had been encouraged by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, bring back stability and return him to office.
At the period, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.
The ex-leader called the trial a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
